Consumer action

There are myriad ways that consumers can make more responsible fashion choices, says Sarah Ditty, deputy editor of the Ethical Fashion Forum's SOURCE Intelligence magazine.

"First, if you do need to buy something new, make sure you ask questions about the garment: Where was it made? How was it made? Who made it? What are the materials? How long will this last me? How do I care for it? How can I dispose of it when I'm finished with it?

"Look at the label, ask the shop assistant and do a little bit of extra research if you have to. Try to buy something with a Fair Trade, Organic or some other kind of ethical or environmental certification. When in doubt try to support small, local designers and look for high-quality, natural materials as they are usually designed for longevity.

"If you have a very limited budget, the least you can do is to try to buy vintage, second-hand, recycled or "upcycled" clothes so that you're giving a garment a new lease on life and diverting it from the landfill."
